What Is Gum
Disease?

Gum disease, also referred to as periodontal disease, is a common condition that is estimated to impact one out of every two Americans according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It results in the accumulation of harmful oral bacteria that leads to infection of the gums and has two stages: gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is the earliest stage of the disease and shows more mild signs, while periodontitis is advanced, and while it can be treated and kept from progressing, it can’t be cured like gingivitis can.

Symptoms of Gum Disease

Depending on the progression of your condition, you may experience a range of gum disease symptoms, including

At each of your checkups, your general dentist or our team at Periodontal Associates of Fort Worth will keep an eye out for any signs of gum disease or that it’s advancing. Based on the evaluation, our team will recommend routine periodontal cleanings, a deep cleaning, or laser treatment.

Consequences of Gum Disease

When left untreated, gum disease in Fort Worth can have a dire impact on your oral health, ultimately leading to tooth loss and deterioration of the supportive structures of your teeth, like the bone and tissue. That’s why timely intervention is necessary—when caught early, our team can reverse the symptoms and restore the health of your smile. If we treat your condition later on, we’ll still be able to help you maintain a healthy smile by preventing your symptoms from worsening.

Periodontal Cleanings

Whether you’d prefer to receive routine periodontal cleanings from Dr. Almasri or rotate between your trusted general dentist and our team, we offer a strong hygiene program to help keep your gums healthy. With routine thorough periodontal cleanings, we’re able to stop the progression of your symptoms and prevent tooth loss as a result of gum recession and bone erosion. We’re happy to accept new patients as referrals and non-referrals.

Scaling & Root
Planing

Scaling and root planing, also known as deep cleanings, are oftentimes the first interventions we take against gum disease. This two-part process typically takes place over the course of one to two visits to our office. We’ll start by thoroughly removing all plaque and tartar from the surface of the teeth to minimize bacteria within the mouth. Then, we’ll smooth out the roots by removing all hardened pockets of bacteria, which will allow your gum tissue to healthily reattach to your teeth.

Laser Gum Disease Treatment with LANAP™

LANAP stands for “Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure,” which is a surgical gum disease treatment that we often recommend for patients who are in the late stages of periodontitis and have more severe tissue damage. Instead of using a scalpel and sutures, we utilize a soft tissue laser to kill bacteria on-contact and remove damaged tissue, leaving the healthy tissue behind. This will allow the gums to reattach to the teeth to protect the roots and prevent tooth loss.
