Do You Have a
Gummy Smile?

Smiles that are “gummy” are those that display an excessive amount of gum tissue whenever you laugh, smile, or speak, making your teeth appear short and stubby. For many people, this makes them feel self-conscious because it’s such a visible imperfection that overruns their entire smile. Ideally, smiles have a good balance of teeth and gums, showing just enough tissue to highlight and frame their pearly whites. Even though gummy smiles can’t be avoided, they are treatable. Crown lengthening and gum recontouring offer a permanent solution that can even out your smile.

Crown Lengthening

Crown lengthening is typically recommended for patients receiving a dental crown or other restoration that needs to be anchored to existing teeth. Using a soft tissue laser, Dr. Almasri will reshape your gums towards the base, extending the tooth and allowing enough structure to show to fit the restoration over it. It’s important that there’s at least two millimeters of surface area of tooth for crowns or abutments to properly bond to, preventing possible complications like weakened or compromised restorations.

Gum Recontouring

Similar to crown lengthening, gum recontouring redefines the shape of your gumline to expose more of your dental structure. However, this procedure is more designed to achieve ideal cosmetic results instead of specific functional ones. Dr. Almasri will remove excess gum tissue to reveal more of your tooth structure, creating a more even ratio of gums to teeth for a confident and healthy-looking smile.
